Weekender 8/21/15

To Our New Jersey Life Sciences Community:
Welcome to another edition of the Weekender.

We start this week’s Weekender off with a special call out to precious 6-year old Patient Advocate Max Schill, who was diagnosed at the age of one and a half with Rasopathy, called Noonan Syndrome. We are so proud of our Magic Max who hails from New Jersey and spent a great deal of time and effort traveling to Washington to lobby for the passage of the 21st Century Cures legislation. This amazing young man met with over 30 Members of Congress during the full House vote and has since personally written 51 thank you notes to all of the Energy and Commerce Committee Members who voted yes for this very important bill. Max you are a true inspiration.
The pharmaceutical industry has long boosted New Jersey’s commercial real estate, with some of the world’s biggest drugmakers calling the Garden State home. And, per Cushman & Wakefield’s New Jersey Pharma/Life Sciences Market Report, this isn’t changing anytime soon. However, this shouldn’t come as a surprise for a State that counts companies such as BioNJ Members Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Novartis, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Sanofi, Celgene, Amicus Therapeutics and Bayer as corporate citizens. In fact, the number of pharma/life sciences establishments in New Jersey has increased by 9.4since 2008.
Because Patients Can’t Wait, we were excited to learn that BioNJ Member Edge Therapeutics filed with the SEC to raise up to $115 million in an initial public offering. Edge Therapeutics is developing formulations of existing therapies for ruptured brain aneurysms.
Congratulations to BioNJ Member Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals for receiving the Green Arrow Award for System & Design Innovations for its resourceful medication delivery system, the Somatuline® Depot (lanreotide) Injection.
NJBIZ just released its “Forty Under 40” honorees for 2015, that included BioNJ Members Lisa John-Basta from Chiesa Shahinian & Giantomasi PC, Jose Lozano from Hackensack University Medical Center, David Schwartz from DLA Piper and Jay Shepulski from WithumSmith+Brown, PC. Congratulations to these rising stars!
New Jersey dominated Newsweek‘s “America’s Top High Schools” list released this week, taking four of the top five spots in the rankings. Congratulations to High Technology High School in Lincroft, The Academy for Mathematics Science and Engineering in Rockaway, Union County Magnet High School in Scotch Plains and Bergen County Academies in Hackensack. We are so proud!
